We use Gallery both as a stand along tool and one that is embedded within Joomla. It's ability to process images, build albums, manage permissions and more is really hard to beat. Gallery creates thumbnails on the fly, can integrate with iPhoto or Picassa, and even includes an ecommerce and watermarking component.
